Preliminary Recommendations—January 14

In the January 14 public meeting, local residents developed a set of very preliminary recommendations for strengthening the regional creative economy in Anson and Stanly Counties.

They expected a working group to take these recommendations and further refine them for presentation to a second public meeting on April 14.

The preliminary recommendations included:

• Create Website, Blog, and/or Facebook Page for the Creative Economy Initiative.  Comment: Interested citizens can sign up to participate in ongoing deliberations and be included in a mailing list informing them of upcoming events. It also would provide an accessible venue for tracking actions and outcomes. If Facebook page, the two counties would have the ability to send out the initiative’s page asking locals to “become a friend of” the project.

• Develop a Local Food Marketing / Branding Initiative.

• Promote Natural Resources as Tourism Opportunities (Morrow Mountain, Lakes, Uwharries, etc.).

• Develop and Support Entrepreneurship Education Opportunities.

• Promote and Support Local Artisans as Entrepreneurs.

• Develop Wayfinding Trails Promoting Arts, Crafts, and Local Foods.

• Create Map of Area Tourist Attractions and Activities.

• Encourage the Small Business Administration (SBA) to collaborate with the Small Business and Technology Development Centers (SBTDC) at Stanly Community College and South Piedmont Community College to create a shared “Creativity Institute” in one location. Comment:  Such a facility could offer services and training for local entrepreneurs.

• Promote Value-Added Specialty Agriculture.
